This is a subject that has been on my heart for a long time
because I totally adore my own male Cockapoos.

I feel I owe it to them to create this web page.

I receive alot of email inquiring
about the differences between
Cockapoo males and females.

Hopefully, this page will be helpful
and give you a better understanding of
Little Girl Puppies vs. Little Boy Puppies.

I also have one very important question for you.....

What's wrong with little boys???

Biscuit would like to know too......
He is very much loved by the Cobb family.

It seems that so many people want a female puppy.

As a breeder, it can become extremely disheartening
because I know beyond a shadow of a doubt that
MALE COCKAPOOS ARE ABSOLUTELY WONDERFUL LITTLE DOGS.

Most, if not all of the families we place our puppies with
are looking for the best dog they can find....
and yet these same families over & over again
will overlook the outstanding qualities
of an adorable male puppy that is available.

How frustrating it is when I have
absolutely perfect male puppies available
and fifty plus people calling & emailing every day
begging for us to put them on the list for a female.

I keep repeating that we do not maintain a waiting list
but for some reason, that seems to be
a difficult concept for some people to grasp.

Our policy is that our puppies
are placed on a first come - first served basis
AFTER they are born.

I've been offered TRIPLE my asking price
if I will "just ask a family" to give up
the female they placed a deposit on
so another family can purchase it.

When that happens....
The family making that type of request
will NOT be purchasing a puppy from me.

Just a word of caution....
DON'T ASK!

I am continually refunding deposits through paypal
because people send them on expected litters
hoping to gain an edge in acquiring a female puppy.

I have voided and returned
many checks uncashed.

That does not make me happy
nor win you any points.

I end up being called a horrible uncaring breeder
because I return the deposits trying to keep it fair
for all those with approved applications.

It has never happened for a male puppy....
It is always for a little girl.

WHY????

Our puppies are placed without breeding rights...
So what is going on out there???
If you aren't going to breed your dog
what is so special about a female??

As a breeder and advocate
of both males & females...,
I'd really like to know.

Is it because you prefer
pink toys over blue toys?

Think about it...

Please really think about it.

Why do you feel so strongly about females?

If you treat your puppy with respect
and train your puppy to be good canine citizen...
you will have a wonderful family pet.

Why do so many people only want to consider a female???

Both males & females make excellent companions!

Behavior is not gender specific...

Dogs that are trained - behave well.
Dogs that are not trained usually behave badly.

Dog's prefer to behave as dogs....
We have chosen to domesticate them.

It is our responsibilty to train them
so they know how to behave.

Untrained dogs run into streets and get ran over...
Trained dogs know "Come, sit, down, stay" etc
In other words they know how to behave.

Personality is not gender specific.
It can be puppy specific.
Puppies have individual personalities
just as people have individual personalities
and many of the qualities your dog will have
will also depend alot on YOU.

Temperament is also puppy specific.

In my opinion, it can also be breeder specific.

The first 7 weeks of life are crucial
and play a huge role in temperament.

I know we do everything possible we can do here
to make sure your puppy has a sound temperament.

If you love your puppy, treat your puppy with kindness,
take time to reward your puppy for good behavior,
take the time to correct & modify unacceptable behavior..
I guarantee you that male or female will not matter in the least.

There are very definate character traits that vary between males & females
and that is what I'd like to attempt to explain to you
based on several years of personal experience & observation
as a dog breeder, trainer, & behavorist.

If you want a puppy you can nuture,
pamper and dress up in cute little outfits..
males have my vote - hands down.

Males seem to be much more tolerant of pampering...
They are tolerant because they want to please YOU!

Little girls usually just want to get on with their day
and being fussed over may not be on their agenda for the day.

Little girls (like most BIG girls) have their own agendas.

If you have tunnel vision and consider a female puppy only...
You may be missing out on the best dog you will ever find.

Please don't close your mind to a male
just because you have pre-conceived notions.

Many pre-conceived notions
are simply not based on fact.

I receive email constantly from people telling me
that they want a "sweet little baby girl"...

Little boy puppies are
just as sweet as little girl puppies -
If not more so........
.
These same people tell me they want a dog "Just like Hanson"...
Or "Just Like McBeckett".....yet they only want a "female"...

What am I missing here???

Many of you seem to believe that female dogs make better companions.

Most of you don't seem to be aware that females
can also display alpha behaviors like 'marking' and/or 'humping'.
Many of you believe females are more laid back, more loving
and do not become territorial, toy possessive, or food aggressive.

Both males &  females can & do -  if you permit it...
and if I was placing a bet on who wouldn't...
my money would be placed on a male.

Both males & females make excellent companion dogs.

Females can also display alpha behaviors like marking & humping.
You can mark just as easily by squatting -
Lifting a leg is not necessary...

You can trust me on that one..
.I clean up puppy puddles seven days a week.

Within the pack -  females run the show.

They also determine pecking order.

They even determine who has the right to compete
to maintain and/or alter that order.

The females are, as a result, more independent, stubborn,
and territorial than their male counterparts.

The females are much more intent upon exercising their dominance
by participating in alpha behaviors such as 'humping'.

There is a reason why people utilize
the technical dog term of 'bitch' in a negative way.

It refers directly to the behaviors
exhibited by the females of the dog world.

Most fights will usually break out between 2 females.

Males, on the other hand, are usually more
affectionate, exuberant, attentive,
and more demanding of your attention.

They are very attached to their people.

They also tend to be more steadfast, reliable, and less moody.

Males are more outgoing,
more accepting of other pets,
and take quicker to children.

Most males are easily motivated by food.

They love praise.

They are so eager to please that training is accomplished relatively quickly.

A male is more likely to act silly and more puppy-like
throughout his entire adult life..

He is always ready and willing to play games with you.

Males are more easily distracted during training
but they are still a joy to train as long as you
keep a sense of humor about it & are patient.

Boys are fun-loving until the day they die.

Females tend to be more reserved or dignified as they age.

Males are the human equivalent of
the twinkling eyed Grandpa still playing catch at age 70,
while Grandma quietly observes from the porch.

Neutered males rarely exhibit secondary sexual behavior
such as 'humping', or 'marking' and lifting of legs.
Once the testosterone levels recede after neutering,
most of these behaviors (if they ever existed) will disappear.
Boys who are neutered early (by 6 months of age)
usually don't ever raise their leg to urinate.

While the female will come to you for attention,
when she's had enough - she will move away.

Females are much more peripheral than males.

The best way I can think of to explain it is that
females seem to want to patrol the entire house.

They like to check out everything
and make sure everything is secure and okay.

They make it their mission in life.

Males stick close by you like little body guards.
They want to see you, touch you, be with you
and that way they know you're safe and okay.

That seems to be their mission in life.

I guess you could say I have the best of both worlds.

Boys are always waiting for your attention and near at hand.

They stick to you like velcro.

They will spend hours just staring at me
or napping near me just waiting for me to make a move.

They make me laugh every single day.

My females spend alot of time looking out the window
making sure the property is secure.

I'm not sure what they plan to do if it isn't....
Probably invite the intruder in for lunch.

The primary reason females are usually
less distracted during training,
is because she is more eager to get it over with,
and get back to her job of patroling
or her comfy spot on the couch.

The female is less likely to wage a dominance battle with you,
but she can be cunning and resourceful in getting her own way.

She is much more prone to mood swings.
One day she may be sweet and affectionate.
The next day she can be reserved and withdrawn or even grumpy.

This is not to say that I don't love my little girls.
I love them very much & equally to my males...
but if I have six Cockapoos running through the house...
My males are in my office with their heads and/or paws on my feet.
If I leave the room, they are right behind me like little ducks...

My females are all over the house...
One may be crashed in the TV room...
One or two may be on my bed..
One may be eating in the kitchen..
My little males are with me..
That's where they long to be...

My females will come and check in on me periodically
to make sure all is well...then they quickly go back
to wherever it is they want to be at the time
after getting a little attention.

That normally involves staring at the treat jar on my desk
until I take the time to give them a biscuit.

I consider the attitude of most of my girls to be..
"What's in this for me???"

I consider the attitude of all of my males to be..
"How can I make YOU happy today"...
They live to please ME.

As long as they accomplish making me happy - they are happy.

If you still have your heart set on a little girl....that's completely understandable.
I wouldn't trade my little girls for the universe....

I just really felt the need to speak up
for all the little boys that I love so much
.
Little girls are everything
people say they are & more,
but so are little boys....

They are both delightful, very special, amazing,
intelligent, loving, loyal, funny, wonderful,
affectionate, adorable, miraculous little gifts from God.

And as a side note...
For those who want to know why a puppy
is the last puppy remaining in the litter.

I don't know why...

I have a good idea.....

There is one puppy chosen last
in every litter born in the entire world.

People choose puppies for many different reasons.

Some like the smallest puppy - some want the largest puppy..
Some want a curly puppy, some prefer a fluffy puppy.
Some families ask me to make the selection.
Some people want the puppy that chooses them.
Just because a puppy is the last puppy in the litter
does not mean the puppy is inferior.

Time & time again, I have witnessed what I as a breeder consider
to be the outstanding pick of the litter be chosen last.

From what I've experienced on my end...
God has usually just held that last puppy back
for just the right family.
