the two original breeds.

Many Cockapoo owners occasionally
take their dog to a professional groomer.

You can also easily learn
to groom your Cockapoo at home.

There are many excellent products
listed below that will help you
with routine grooming & maintenance.

You should acclimate your puppy
to grooming at an early age.

Brushing, bathing, clipping,
ear, teeth & nail care
are all things that will need
to be done on a regular basis.

A clean well groomed dog is
a much healthier dog
and a pleasure to enjoy
as your companion.

Your puppy should be taught to relax
and stand while being groomed.

It is important that your puppy
accepts this care easily
and without fear.

Grooming should be a pleasant
bonding experience.

Have fun with it.

It's fun to pamper your Cockapoo..

Cockapoos are prone to bad teeth as they age.

Good dental care
throughout their lifetime
is very necessary.

They should only eat healthy snacks in limited amounts

We suggest a professional cleaning
at least once a year.
Excess tartar should be removed
from adult teeth with a tooth scaler.

Brushing with a good product
on a regular basis is also important.
Feeding your dog hard, crunchy kibble
is also very beneficial.

As the proud owner of a Cockapoo,
you will no doubt be seeking out the services
of a professional groomer at some point.

It is important that you first get
several good references.

Many groomers are very caring & compassionate ~
but a select few are not so caring.

Your Cockapoo is like your child
and deserves to be groomed
by someone who will treat
him or her gently & with respect

It is also important
that you train & socialize your puppy...
so your puppy will be welcome
at the groomer of your choice.

It is important that you
are able to convey
to your groomer
the type of groom
you would like.

If you don't ~
You may pick up a dog
that has been
completely shaved...
or you may feel
that you paid too much money
for "too little" groom.

At this time, there is no standard "Cockapoo" cut.
Many groomers will groom your Cockapoo
to resemble a Bichon Frise.

If you don't care for that look ~
be sure to communicate
your preferences to your groomer.

You need to be specific.

The first time your puppy is clipped....
the shorter the cut - the better.
The coat will grow back much nicer & thicker
once all of the puppy fluff has been taken off.

How often you clip or have your dog clipped
depends on your personal preference.

The shorter the cut...
the less frequently clipping will be required

Never leave your dog
on a grooming table unattended
and never walk away from your dog
while you are using the noose.

We personally use & recommend
using a grooming sling.

It is also advisable to be very cautious with scissors
and never cut wet hair with scissors.
It is an accident waiting to happen.
If possible, avoid scissoring entirely
and stick to the clippers
unless you are a professional.

As a side note,
it will be better for your bank account
if you keep your Cockapoo "mat free".
Most groomers charge extra for mat removal.
Daily brushing & regular grooming will prevent matting.

Trimming the nails is relatively easy -
Just go slow & use a good pair of nail clippers.
You can always just clip off the tip of the nail,
and file the remainder to the desired length.
It helps to push on the paw pad to bring out the nail.
You should always have kwik stop readily available.
It's always best to be prepared.

Your groomer can also teach you how to clip the nails.

It is important to keep the hair
trimmed away from the eyes
and to keep the area clean
& free of bacteria.
Cockapoos are prone to tearing
but it is easy to care for
if done on a regular basis
There are several good products on the market
to help with the tear staining.

It is important to keep the ears clean.
Washing the ears out weekly
with a good ear cleaning product
will help keep the ears odor free.

It is also important to keep the hair trimmed
from inside the ear to prevent infection.
This can be accomplished by using a good ear powder
and removing the hair with a hemostat.

And last, but not least ~
Be sure to discuss your dog's "anal gland"
with your groomer or Veterinarian.

We are often ask
how often a Cockapoo should be bathed.
There is no simple answer.
If your Cockapoo appears dirty...
or is beyond your comfort level....
it's time for a nice warm bath.

Cockapoos have no natural "doggie odor"..
However, they do get dirty eliminating in wet grass,
running through mud puddles, and rolling in things
you'd never consider rolling in....
If your doggie smells - or looks dirty...
It's bath time!
And let's face it..........
They are just too darn cute when well groomed
not to want to keep them that way at all times.
